Lots to tell you!

hi everyone! I’ve had a very busy start to 2025, so it’s been a while since I posted news. But there’s so much going on that I am excited about, and I want you to know about!

Firstly, we have just had the great pleasure of having some brand new music played on BBC Radio 3 as part of The Essay. This was a five-part series called “The Song Detectorists”, presented by Folk on Foot’s Matthew Bannister and arising from a major national research project that I’m a co-investigator on, called “Music Heritage Place”. You can read more about the project here: MUSIC HERITAGE PLACE

and listen to the fantastic BBC Radio 3 series here: THE SONG DETECTORISTS

Secondly, I’ll be presenting music alongside my band Melrose Quartet from this amazing uncovering of music held in England’s county archives at three folk festivals in 2025 – Warwick, Folk by the Oak and Shrewsbury. As well as concert performances, these festivals will also feature singing workshops led by Melrose Quartet, that you can be part of – we’ll look at music collected in the local region of each festival, and teach you some of it! We’re also running a youth folk day in BRISTOL on June 7th with Melrose Quartet and the National Youth Folk Troupe of England, including workshops, concerts and a ceilidh, featuring some music from Music Heritage Place. It’s at the Bristol Beacon and is going to be great fun – book here

Thirdly – I’m so incredibly excited about my NEW BAND! We are a five-woman fiddlesinging ensemble called SÃWOL (an old English word for soul, that rhymes with owl.) My dear friends in the band are Jess Arrowsmith, Rosie Butler-Hall, Fi Fraser and Sarah Matthews. We debuted at Upton-upon-Severn Folk Festival at the start of May and it was thrilling! Here’s a song from that concert: SÃWOL ON YOUTUBE

You can see Sãwol in concert on May 30th at Crookes Social Club in Sheffield, as part of a big fundraising concert for the vitally important S6 Foodbank. Tickets here

Finally, can I ask that you consider coming to my special concert in London on November 15th, at Cecil Sharp House – it’s the 30th Anniversary of my duo with James Fagan, and we’re celebrating in style! Please tell your friends, and come and share this with us! NANCY AND JAMES AT CECIL SHARP HOUSE

Thanks for reading! Have a great summer (or winter if you’re on the other side of the world)
